Chic on a Shoestring

Embracing luxury without the lavish price tag

What if I told you that you don’t need to be rich to live richly? The secret to luxury isn’t hidden behind velvet ropes or VIP lounges, it’s in your everyday choices, mindset, and the way you curate your life with intention.

Luxury, to me, is sipping tea from a mug I love, lighting a candle at 7pm just because, and knowing my money is working as hard as I do. It’s small moments of softness, and the systems I’ve built to make them sustainable. Here’s how you can create that feeling in your life, starting today.

Start with systems that make you feel in control

One of the most underrated luxuries is financial calm. It’s not about how much you have, it’s about how you manage it.

Start by setting up automated systems that serve you. Whether it’s automating your savings or tracking your spending, these quiet habits create space for joy and softness. Not sure where to begin? I shared all my go-to tools in this guide to the money tools I can’t live without.

Spoiler alert: luxury begins with clarity.

Intentional living is the new status symbol

If you want to live luxuriously, be intentional with your time and energy. That means saying no to what drains you and yes to what feeds your peace, even if that’s just a quiet night with a face mask and your favourite playlist.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this add beauty or meaning to my life?
  • Does this help me slow down?
  • Am I doing this because I want to, or because I think I should?

Luxury is alignment. And the most luxurious people I know? They know what they want, and what they’re no longer available for.

Use reward programmes like they are part of your self care routine

Living well isn’t just about spending, it’s about spending wisely. Whether you’re booking a weekend away or buying a new throw blanket, use programmes that reward you for what you already do.

I personally use the British Airways Avios reward system. I pair that with my Barclaycard and American Express BA credit cards to earn points, and make sure I only spend what I can pay off in full each month. I even use a Hilton Currensea debit card when I need to dip into my everyday spend in places that don’t take credit.

Rewards aren’t just financial, they’re mental. They remind me I’m building a life of comfort and flexibility, one decision at a time.

(Need help choosing a rewards card that aligns with your lifestyle? I talk more about that in this post.)

Curate over consume

This is your permission slip to do less, but better. A luxurious life isn’t one that’s packed to the brim with newness. It’s one that feels edited, calming, and clear.

Choose things: habits, items, spaces, that feel like a deep breath. This might mean keeping your wardrobe simple but elevating your scent game, or choosing to upgrade your morning routine instead of chasing endless productivity hacks.

Quality over quantity doesn’t just apply to what’s in your wardrobe, it’s about what you let into your world.

Create sensory rituals

Want to feel luxurious without spending a penny? Engage your senses. Light a candle (I refill mine from The Refillable Candle Company), sip from your favourite glass, play a soundscape that makes your room feel like a boutique hotel.

You don’t need to buy more, you just need to experience more. Intentional, sensory living is the quiet luxury trend that’s here to stay.

You Don’t Need to Look Rich to Feel Rich

This lifestyle isn’t about pretending, it’s about redefining. You can be financially savvy, emotionally grounded, and living a life that feels expensive, without the external pressure to prove anything.

Living luxuriously on a shoestring isn’t about sacrifice. It’s about sovereignty. And that’s the most luxurious thing of all.
